In the 1920s, Aby Warburg (1866–1929), the scholar of art and culture, created his Bilderatlas Mnemosyne tracing recurring visual themes, gestures and patterns across time, from antiquity to the Renaissance and beyond to contemporary culture. At HKW all 63 panels of the Atlas will be reconstituted for the first time from Warburg’s original, partly multi-colored images.

“In Webcam Venus, we asked online sexcam performers to replicate iconic works of art. This piece is an experimental homage to both fine art and the lowbrow internet phenomenon of cams. Sexcams use webcams and chat interfaces to connect amateur adult performers with an audience. Users log on to see men, women, transsexuals, couples and groups broadcast their bodies and sexuality live for the public, often performing for money. To create this experiment in high and low brow media, we assumed anonymous handles and spent a few hours each day for a month asking performers: “Would you like to pose for me?””
Il video l’abbiamo visto tutti, e continua a rimbalzare sui social network di tutto il mondo (un po’ meno sui media tradizionali), suscitando indignazione e una comprensibile ridda di polemiche. Nel filmato, girato lo scorso 18 novembre, si vede Lt. John Pike, poliziotto in servizio presso la California University a Davis, spruzzare spray urticante direttamente negli occhi di uno sparuto gruppetto di studenti, seduti in dimostrazione pacifica in un viale del campus. Quello che colpisce, oltre all’atto in sé, è la nonchalance dell’ufficiale, che passeggia disinvolto di fronte ai ragazzi e li attacca con lo spray con l’aria di qualcuno che stia liberando la soffitta dagli scarafaggi. Queste immagini hanno fatto subito il giro del mondo e sono diventate uno degli emblemi del movimento di protesta statunitense, che trova il suo fulcro nel gruppo OWS (Occupy Wall Street), anch’esso sgombrato con la forza qualche giorno fa da Zuccotti Park, ma nient’affatto spento.
La potenza virale dell’immagine dell’ufficiale spruzzatore (“the pepper spray cop”) ha però superato i confini della semplice condivisione, trasformandosi in un vero e proprio “meme” (così vengono chiamati i contenuti virali sul web, specie quando contemplano infinite reinterpretazioni del tema originale). Da ieri sera John Pike ha fatto ufficialmente il suo ingresso nella storia dell’arte, grazie a una serie di divertenti fotomontaggi che lo vedono inserito in alcune tele storiche: da Le dejuner sur l’erbe di Manet a La Grande Jatte di Seurat. Passando per Delacroix e Michelangelo. Da qualche ora, poi, sono apparse anche versioni un po’ più contemporanee, che coinvolgono Banksy e Marina Abramovic, e la catena non sembra destinata a fermarsi…

“In the 15th century, artists discovered how to paint bodies and landscapes as if they had depth and solidity. Painting triumphed over the flat surface to create the illusion of a real scene glimpsed through the square enclosure of the wooden panel or canvas, as if you were watching a play on a stage. The effect was just as dazzling, just as unexpected as 3D cinema – and it has lasted a lot longer than the gimmicks of 1950s science fiction.”
